Course Overview

As a progression from Get to Know Your Sewing Machine, this course gives learners an introduction to Dressmaking. In this course you will learn: How to read the pattern envelope, how to read the pattern pieces and the instruction leaflet inside the pattern envelope, how to create darts, zips, facing/waistband, buttonholes.

You will need

A sewing kit e.g. scissors, needles and pins, tape measure etc

Fabric to make a skirt or trousers

Matching threads to your chosen fabric

Skirt or trouser pattern of your choice. Suggested pattern: Simplicity S8957 or New Look 6106

Interfacing, zips, button required for your chosen pattern

Sewing machine (Optional) we have sewing machines learners can use at college

You will get to know other people with the same interest of sewing as yourself and be able to share your interests and ideas. Your tutor will give you guidance to develop your confidence, knowledge and skills through individual assistance throughout your chosen project.

During the 10 week course you will create a garment you will be proud of. If you complete your project within the 10 weeks you could make either the other project, trousers or skirt, or have attempt a blouse or top.

When the course has finished you will have the option to progress onto the Dressmaking for Intermediates course where you can further your skills and knowledge with more challenging tasks such as making bias binding, piping, different types of pockets, collars, sleeves and zips.
