Careers and Work Experience

Careers and Work Experience

Our commitment

We aim to meet the personalised needs of each of our learners through the eight Gatsby benchmarks of Good Career Guidance. This strategy is aimed at learners, parents, carers and employers so we can work cohesively together.

City College Peterborough is committed to using a range of different ways to ensure students have access to information about careers. Wall displays in the College showcase information for learners about taking part in work experience in a range of different employment sectors. Our Students and parents are encouraged and supported to use the National Careers Service job profiles.

Encounters with employers and employees

As well as external links with employers, City College Peterborough has made a commitment to using its own workforce to enhance and develop the skills of learners through Take over days and shadowing opportunities. Learners have the chance to apply for a “Job ” in the college and shadow member of the college staff. Learners are supported to make meaningful contributions and learn about the world of work in a supportive environment.

City College Peterborough has a long and successful history of working in partnership with independent businesses and large organisations to support learners to develop their employment skills.

Our Employment Partners

Royal Mail

Royal Mail has been working with City College Peterborough since 2019; offering physical and virtual work experience placements. We hosted three students for six weeks before the pandemic where they were able to attend our sites and get a taste of what it is like to work at Royal Mail. We watched the student’s confidence grow and it was great to see the staff engage in sharing their passion for the business.

Family Action

Family Action operates early years childcare settings across Peterborough and have been working in partnership with City College Peterborough for over a year to offer placements for learners. The college has supported the learners heavily to ensure they feel confident to attend a placement. This includes meeting the student at their placement location for an initial meet and greet session and maintaining regular contact to ensure the work experience is going well.

Morrisons

From Morrisons we have gained three happy, cheerful colleagues whom we are completely invested in; we want to ensure they achieve all that possible. We are looking forward to welcoming more learners from around the college and working towards employment. Watching the young adults develop and grow and for them to know John Mansfield Campus and Morrisons do truly care about their future is an excellent pathway for all parties.

Meeting your needs

Person-centred planning is at the heart of City College Peterborough Careers strategy. Learners have structured opportunities within their programme such as helping in the coffee shop, helping the facilities team, participating in college community projects and making food for staff and visitors. These opportunities are tailored to learners interests and vocational goals. Learners have opportunities to engage in meaningful work-related activities with tailored levels of staff support to develop independence in areas including travel.

The college also offers personalised sensory boxes filled with amazing tactile items relating to specific jobs roles, to help encourage exploration of work and careers development.

Our dedicated wellbeing team support learners on their journey and ensure that they are receiving the right support to make the most of their learning opportunities.

Your Path, Your Choice – is designed to deliver careers education, at the right level, with the right support, to enable learners and create sustainable pathways for the future. Our Study Programme package includes maths, English, citizenship and a vocational pathway.
