Course Overview

Practising cooking is an important life skill because it helps you look after yourself, make healthier choices, and feel more confident doing everyday tasks at home. Over this 30 week course, you’ll build confidence in the kitchen by learning how to prepare meals that keep you warm in winter, boost your energy, and nourish your body in the summer months.

This course is for you if you are a Supported Adult Learner (SAL) aged 19 or over, who has learning disabilities, does not have an EHCP, and want to gain more independence with your cooking skills while enjoying food, fun and friendship.

By following simple recipes, you will work together to cook a full meal from start to finish and then sit down to eat together as a group. This gives you the chance to make friends, build confidence and enjoy the food you’ve made.

You will look at things such as:

• Using kitchen appliances safely

• Understanding the Eatwell food plate and making balanced meals

• Cooking meals suited for different seasons

• Practising good kitchen hygiene

• Eating together

• Developing independence you can use at home
