This introductory course provides a clear and accessible guide to how telescopes work and how they are used in modern astronomy. Students explore the different types of telescopes—reflectors, refractors, and compound designs—and learn how optics, magnification, and light gathering power influence what we see in the night sky. The course also covers essential equipment such as mounts, eyepieces, filters, and camera attachments.
Through practical demonstrations and hands on activities, learners develop the skills to set up, align, and safely operate a telescope. The course also introduces observing techniques for viewing planets, the Moon, deep sky objects, and more. By the end of the module, students will have the confidence to choose, use, and care for a telescope, making it ideal for beginners, hobbyists, or anyone curious about exploring the Universe.
You will learn about Telescope designs which include Refractor, Reflector, Catadioptric. What are the differences and when do we use them. Some reference is made to binoculars. Understand the specifications of telescopes – Learn how to buy the right one for your needs. Understand the different types of telescope mounts – How we use them and set them up.
