Course Overview

An exciting evening course learning how to find your way around the sky. You will learn about astronomy including how to read easily understood star charts so as to find your way around the sky, what are the most exciting and interesting things to look at (and what they actually are) along with how to understand choosing and using a wide variety of telescopes and other optical aids so as to leave you better informed during your first steps in astronomy, taking the mystery out of what may on first glance look overwhelming. A friendly, approachable atmosphere where all questions are encouraged.

Imagine standing beneath a velvet canopy of stars, where constellations twinkle like scattered diamonds and the Milky Way stretches across the heavens like a luminous river. In this course, you’ll learn the art of reading simple, beautifully illustrated star charts, turning what once seemed a bewildering tangle of lights into a familiar celestial map.

Discover the most breathtaking sights the universe offers—from the glowing clouds of distant nebulae to the sparkling clusters of newborn stars—and learn what these mysterious objects really are.

You’ll also gain hands-on guidance in choosing and using telescopes and other optical aids, so that your first steps into astronomy are clear and confident, free from confusion and get you over the ‘hump’ that buying your first telescope can sometimes be.

All of this unfolds in a warm, friendly atmosphere where curiosity is celebrated and every question is welcome. Let the night sky transform from a mystery into a place you can truly call your own.

In our Milky Way galaxy, there are an estimated 400 billion stars. On Monday 11 November we invite you to join us to check out just a few!

Under the expert guidance of Dean Watson, you’ll learn to use stargazing equipment to navigate the sky and gain a greater understanding of the world above.
