Course Overview

If you have successfully worked your way around a sewing machine, you may be interested in this sewing technique course.

In preparation for discovering how to develop dressmaking skills this course will provide learners with a comprehensive introduction to essential skills used in dressmaking.

Learners will explore a range of basic seams such as plain, French, flat-felled, and bound seams, along with methods for finishing and strengthening seams using techniques like overlocking, under stitching, and clipping curves. The course also covers working with bulky fabrics, focusing on reducing bulk, and using tools such as a walking foot and hump jumper.

Learners will explore a range of basic darts such as single-pointed and double-ended darts.

Learners are introduced to a variety of fasteners, including buttons, buttonholes, zippers (Invisible, centre, lapped-closed zip and open zip), hooks and eyes, press studs, and Velcro, and gain hands-on experience applying each.

Hemming techniques are explored, including double-fold, blind, rolled, narrow, (Rolled hems) and faced hems.

The course also introduces a range of presser feet, including straight presser foot, overcast presser foot, zipper foot, concealed zipper foot, buttonhole presser foot, blind hem presser foot and rolled hem presser foot, enabling learners to produce professional finishes.

Week 1 – Identify different types of seams and how to apply them to a garment.

Week 2 – Identify different types of darts and how to apply them to a garment.

Week 3 – Identify different types of fasteners and how to apply them to a garment.

Week 4 – Discover different types of hemming used, both hand and machine sewn.

Progression route:

The Sewing Technique Course will lead onto the: Dressmaking for Beginners, Dressmaking for Intermediates, Patchwork and Quilting Course, Cushion Making Course.

You will need

Sewing kit – scissors, pins, needles, sewing thread etc.

Sewing machine (Optional) we do have sewing machines in college you are able to use.

If bringing your own sewing machine and you have the following presser feet please bring them along with you: straight presser foot, overcast presser foot, zipper foot, concealed zipper foot, buttonhole presser foot, blind hem presser foot and rolled hem presser foot.

Fabrics are provided but please bring an 8 or 10 inch lapped, concealed and open zip
